How to revise for a science examination
Most science revision fails because it rereads notes instead of retrieving them. A practical method for revising physics, chemistry and biology in the weeks before a paper.
Rereading notes feels like revision. It rarely is. When a student finishes a chapter and thinks I knew all of that, they have measured familiarity, not recall — and an examination asks for recall under time pressure. The fix is unglamorous and well evidenced: close the notes and try to produce the content from memory before checking it.
Work from the specification, not the textbook
Every science specification is a list of statements beginning “candidates should be able to…”. That list, not the chapter order, is the revision plan. Print it. Mark each statement with a symbol: confident, shaky, or not yet learned. The marks will be uneven and that is the point — revision time should be spent unevenly.
Retrieve before you review
For each shaky statement, work in three passes.
- Blank page. Write everything you can recall about the topic without looking. Definitions, equations, a labelled diagram, a worked example.
- Check and correct. Open the notes and mark your page in a different colour. The corrections are your real weak points; nothing else on the page needs further work.
- Question. Answer two or three examination questions on that statement only, timed roughly to the marks available — about a minute a mark.
The third pass matters most in science, because knowing a definition and applying it to an unfamiliar context are different skills, and papers test the second.
Treat calculation as its own topic
Students often revise physics content and then lose marks on units, significant figures and rearrangement. Keep a running list of every calculation error you make across a fortnight. Patterns appear within days — usually two or three recurring habits, not general weakness. Drill those specifically.
Diagrams are answers, not decoration
Biology and chemistry both award marks for labelled diagrams, and both punish vague ones. Practise drawing the six or seven diagrams a specification really requires until they can be produced from memory in under two minutes each, labels included.
Use past papers late, and properly
A past paper attempted too early tells you little, because you cannot yet do the content. Attempted at the right time, under timed conditions and marked against the official mark scheme, it is the single most useful revision hour available. Do not mark generously. Award the mark only if the answer says what the scheme requires it to say.
A realistic weekly shape
Three or four focused sessions of 40–50 minutes a day beats a nine-hour Saturday. Rotate subjects rather than blocking one for a full day, and finish each session by writing down the one thing you got wrong. The next session starts there.
